Alabama Medicaid Eligibility Calculator (2026)
Alabama never adopted the ACA expansion, so the answer depends almost entirely on who in the house needs coverage: a child or a pregnancy clears Medicaid up to $3,324 a month for a family of three, while the parent in that same family is cut off at $410.

Two very different limits under one roof
The Alabama Medicaid Agency prints a single chart for children under 19, pregnant women and Plan First (its family-planning program): 146% of the poverty line, already counting the 5% disregard. Parents and other caretaker relatives get a separate, much smaller table — $325 for a household of two, $495 for four — and that table also has the disregard built in.[state]
If a child’s family earns too much for Medicaid, the agency forwards the application to ALL Kids, the CHIP program run by the Alabama Department of Public Health, which reaches $7,218 a month for three.[MACPAC] Pregnant women above the Medicaid line are not simply turned away either: Alabama uses CHIP’s from-conception option to cover prenatal care up to the same 317% level.[MACPAC]
| Group | FPL | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Parents | table | $240 | $325 | $410 | $495 | $666 |
| Pregnancy | 317% | $4,217 | $5,717 | $7,218 | $8,718 | $11,719 |
| Children | 317% | $4,217 | $5,717 | $7,218 | $8,718 | $11,719 |
Applying, and what changes in 2027
Applications go through Insure Alabama online, by mail, or in person at county health departments, community health centers and some hospitals. Children who qualify keep coverage for 12 months regardless of income changes, and Medicaid can currently reach back three months before the application month.[state]
That look-back shrinks for anyone applying on or after January 1, 2027: federal law now allows only two prior months for groups like Alabama’s parents, children and pregnant women.[law]
After the baby arrives
Alabama extended postpartum Medicaid to a full year; CMS approved the change on January 13, 2023, and the agency’s handout confirms 12 months of full coverage after delivery.[KFF][state] A newborn whose mother was on Medicaid is covered through the first birthday without a separate application.[MACPAC]
Older adults and people with disabilities
Alabama is a Section 1634 state, so an SSI award brings Medicaid with it. It does not use the optional poverty-level group or a medically needy spend-down; the main route for people who are not on SSI is nursing-home or waiver care at the special income level of $2,982 a month.[MACPAC]
Worked example
A mother in Mobile with a 3-year-old and a 10-year-old earns $1,500 a month cleaning offices. That is 65.9% of the poverty line for 3.
| Parent / caretaker | over by $1,090 | $410 |
| Child 1–5 | covered | $7,218 |
| Child 6–18 | covered | $7,218 |
