The Division of Medicaid’s 2026 chart

Mississippi publishes its limits with the 5% disregard already included, effective March 1, 2026: $294 to $1,007 a month for parents and caretaker relatives depending on household size, 194% of the poverty line for babies and pregnant women, 143% for children 1–5, 133% for older children, and 209% for CHIP.[state]

Pregnant women keep coverage for 12 months after birth, the household counts the expected babies, and pregnant minors under 19 qualify regardless of family income. CHIP accepts only children with no other insurance at application.[state]

Expansion stalled twice

In 2024 the House passed an expansion bill tied to a work-requirement waiver and the Senate passed a narrower version covering adults below 100% of the poverty line; it died in conference. A 2022 ballot campaign was suspended after the state Supreme Court ruled the initiative process inoperable.[KFF]

Postpartum, approved late

CMS approved Mississippi’s 12-month postpartum state plan amendment on December 13, 2023, and the Division of Medicaid now confirms twelve months of benefits after birth.[KFF][state] Any baby born to a Medicaid-eligible mother is covered until age one.[state]

Applying and disability

Apply through ACCESS Mississippi. Working people with disabilities can buy in up to 250% of the poverty line; otherwise older adults rely on SSI or the $2,982 special income level for long-term care.[state][MACPAC]

Worked example

A pregnant 24-year-old in Jackson with a 2-year-old (three people for Medicaid, counting the baby) reports $1,800 a month. That is 79.1% of the poverty line for 3.
