LaCHIP, layer by layer
Regular Medicaid funds children to 142% of the poverty line at every age; CHIP-funded Medicaid (LaCHIP) continues to 212%; and a separate CHIP covers 212% to 250%.[MACPAC] Only that top band works like a separate program, where a child generally must be uninsured.

| Adults 19–64 | 138% | $1,836 | $2,489 | $3,142 | $3,795 | $5,102 |

Pregnancy uses the unborn-child option
Medicaid covers pregnancy only to 133% of the poverty line (138% with the disregard), but Louisiana’s from-conception option extends prenatal coverage to 209% — $4,873 a month for a household of three.[MACPAC] Above 138%, the coverage is for the pregnancy rather than the parent’s other care.
Postpartum
Louisiana’s 12-month postpartum coverage was approved on April 1, 2022.[KFF] It applies to the Medicaid pregnancy group; the from-conception coverage above 138% pays for prenatal care for the unborn child.[MACPAC]
Applying and older adults
The Louisiana Department of Health takes applications through its Medicaid self-service portal. Its medically needy income level varies by region, with the highest at about 8% of the poverty line.[MACPAC]
Worked example
A Baton Rouge couple expecting their first baby (three people for Medicaid) earns $3,800 a month. That is 166.9% of the poverty line for 3.
