Alaska Medicaid Eligibility Calculator (2026)

Alaska runs its own, higher poverty yardstick, so its Medicaid limits are the largest in dollar terms: a single adult qualifies up to $2,295 a month and children in a family of three up to $5,920.

Why Alaska’s dollars are bigger

HHS publishes separate guidelines for Alaska — $19,950 a year for one person in 2026 against $15,960 in the lower 48 — and every percentage-based limit is applied to that larger base.[HHS] The same 138% therefore buys about a quarter more in Fairbanks than in Phoenix or Cleveland.

Denali KidCare and pregnancy

Alaska keeps children inside Medicaid rather than running a separate CHIP. Denali KidCare covers children to 177% of the poverty line with regular Medicaid funds and up to 203% (208% after the disregard) with CHIP money, and pregnancy coverage runs to 225%.[MACPAC]

Parents and caretakers have an unusually generous standard of their own — 128% of the poverty line — though since September 1, 2015 the adult expansion group has covered them to 138% anyway.[MACPAC][KFF]

Postpartum and newborns

New mothers in Alaska keep Medicaid for 12 months after giving birth — CMS signed off on the state plan change on February 23, 2024.[KFF] Babies born to mothers on Medicaid are deemed eligible up to 225% of Alaska’s poverty line.[MACPAC]

Applying through ARIES

The Department of Health’s Division of Public Assistance takes applications through the ARIES self-service portal. Alaska is an “SSI criteria” state: someone receiving SSI still has to file a separate Medicaid application, and the long-term-care income cap is about 178% of Alaska’s poverty line.[MACPAC]

Worked example

A fishing-crew deckhand and a spouse in Kodiak, with two children, average $5,200 a month. That is 151.3% of the poverty line for 4.
